Do you need help determining if your home requires rewiring? Here are a few signs to help you determine when it is time for an electrical upgrade.
Has your house been around for more than 40 years? If so, the wiring likely needs to be updated. Rewiring a home can seem like an overwhelming task, but it is essential to keeping you and your family safe by ensuring your electrical system remains modernised. Here are some telltale signs that new wiring should be installed:
- If your home hasn't seen an electrical update, it may be due for a rewiring.
- You can see dangerous electrical wiring within your home
- Are you tired of constantly experiencing blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers?
- Your faceplates are dangerously hot to touch.
- Are your lights intermittently flickering or appearing dimmer than usual?
If you've been dealing with any previously mentioned issues, it's time to contact an electrician - like us. When we arrive at your home, our team can perform an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) and make sure your electrical system is safe. Plus, we'll advise what repairs need to be done if necessary!
Can I determine if my house has recently been rewired?
If you are still determining if your house has been re-wired recently, there are a few steps to take. You can start by looking over the consumer unit; should it have been updated with an experienced electrician not too long ago, it will be marked down on a sticker indicating when it was last tested.
To ensure maximum safety, your consumer unit should have at least one Residual Current Device (RCD). Even if you only have a single RCD, it is wise to call an electrician and determine whether your consumer unit needs updating. If you are still using rewireable fuses in the consumer unit, you must hire an expert for a full assessment of the situation to find out if any rewiring is necessary.
Another way to identify the age of your electrical wiring is by looking at its colour and state. Wiring a few years older likely has a lead or fabric sheath encasing it, which will be dark in colour. In contrast, modern wiring should have plastic-based insulation outside - usually blue and brown or red and black (blue and brown being the most recent). Blue and brown wiring came into use in 2006.
